About this festival
Award-winning pianist Aaron Goldberg, who has performed with saxophonist Joshua Redman and toured with the Wynton Marsalis Quartet will headline with his Trio at the Art Center at Killingworth-s 5th Annual Jazz NightOut on March 14, 2009. Joshua Redman describes Goldberg as ?one of the most exciting, inventive and lyrical pianists with boundless imagination, burning intensity, exquisite sensitivity and abundant soul.? Jazz NightOut will be kicked off by seventeen year-old Hartford-area drum prodigy Jimmy Macbride and his Trio.
This evening concert is a true ?NightOut? ? held in a café-style environment with appetizers, desserts, beverages, and a large screen video presenting a close-up view of the performers. Like previous years, Jazz NightOut is at the Living Rock Church, 138 Route 81, Killingworth.
Headliner Aaron Goldberg, who studied at New York-s New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, graduated from Harvard University where he was discovered by first lady of Jazz, Betty Carter. He went on to become a founding member of Carter-s historic Jazz Ahead Program. He wasted no time after moving to the Big Apple, performing with an array of Jazz greats including Tom Harrell, Freddie Hubbard and drum legend Al Foster. For four years he toured with Redman, performing on two of his albums, Beyond and Passage of Time. In addition, he spent six months with The Wynton Marsalis Quartet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. In 1999, Goldberg released Turning Point, his first recording as a leader, followed by Unfolding in 2002. The Boston Globe called his latest album Worlds, released in 2006, ?a gorgeous session that makes a compelling case for Goldberg's ensemble as one of the era's definitive piano trios.?
Hartford-area drum prodigy Jimmy Macbride, who will open this year-s Jazz NightOut, performed at the 2008 Monterey Jazz Festival and was recently awarded Down Beat Magazine-s ?Outstanding Soloist of the Year Award? for Students in both 2008 and 2006. His composition, Tenure, won a Young Jazz Composers award in 2007 from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). His piece, Joe-s Lament, was a semi-finalist in the 2005 International Songwriting Competition (ISC), with a big band arrangement capturing a semi-finalist position in 2007. Also that year, he headlined at the Trinity-on-Main church in New Britain with Jimmy Greene. Recent performances include the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz in Hartford-s Bushnell Park, and the JVC Jazz Festival in New York. In addition, he serves on the student task force of West Hartford-s Gifts of Music, a foundation that raises money for local youth unable to afford musical instruments or lessons. He is an endorser of Grover SilverFox Drumsticks.
