Dwight D. Eisenhower Signed Baseball on Steiner Auctions Block

New York, July 17 ? A baseball signed by Dwight D. Eisenhower is one of the lynchpin memorabilia pieces from the collection of fabled Brooklyn Dodgers third baseman Cookie Lavagetto on the auction block in Steiner Auctions Mid-Summer Classic auction. Other collectibles on the block include a Richard Nixon signed baseball, as well as Cookie's game-used glove from the 1940-s. A Brooklyn Dodgers team autographed baseball that includes signatures of such immortals as Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese, Lavagetto-s 1948 Oakland Acorns Pacific Coast League Championship ring, his Silver Lifetime Pass presented by Major League Baseball, an autographed Honus Wagner photograph, and a baseball signed by legendary manager Casey Stengel are also up for grabs. Lavagetto is perhaps best known for breaking up the no-hitter of Yankees pitcher Bill Bevens in Game 4 of the 1947 World Series at Ebbets Field with two outs in the ninth inning, in what became known as the ?Cookie Game.? Lavagetto-s first professional team was the Oakland Oaks in his hometown, where he was tagged with the nickname ?Cookie? after one of the team-s owners. He then played 10 seasons in the National League with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1934-36) and most notably with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1937-41 and 1946-47, missing four seasons serving in the United States Navy during World War II). He finished his career returning to the Oaks for two seasons (1948-50). Lavagetto later managed in the majors with the Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins.
