3,000 Support JDRF in One Walk at Empire City Casino
October 26, 2026
Yonkers, NY
About this festival
An enthusiastic and dedicated throng ? a full field of 3,000 representing the largest in history ? went behind the starting gate on historic Yonkers Raceway-s half-mile oval at the Fifth Annual ?One Walk? to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on Sunday (October 23).
The nip in the morning air and blustery winds didn-t hamper the enthusiasm of the assembled masses in their efforts to lend support to Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway Vice President and COO Bob Galterio and his efforts to fight juvenile diabetes. It has been 16 years since his daughter Cara was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 9. At that time, the longtime executive was immediately compelled to take action to fight the disease, and the ?Cure for Cara? was born. He continues to do so, including last Sunday when several thousand Empire City employees, volunteers and participants gathered to take action in the ?One Walk? for JDRF. Galterio once again served as captain of the ?Cure for Cara? team.
?It is so important to be working alongside JDRF on such an important goal ? curing a disease in which 80 people are diagnosed with every day,? said Galterio. ?JDRF-s One Walk is a morning full of celebration, community and families gathering together to support their loved ones with type one diabetes.?
Jessica Waldman of ?Team Jessica? cut the ribbon to start the proceedings. The ?Type 1 Toughs,? strongly represented with more than three dozen participants, wore Superman style ?M? logos on their T-shirts ? the ?M? representing Matty.
