GLENDI is the Greek word for PARTY!
The GLENDI Ethnic Food Fair is an annual event celebrating the ethnic diversity of the Protection of the Holy Virgin Parish and Saint Seraphim Orthodox Church. Established in 1936, ours is the oldest Orthodox Church in Sonoma County.
Each year thousands come to GLENDI to eat, dance and celebrate at the GLENDI Ethnic Food Fair, voted "Best Way to Eat Around the World" by the Sonoma County Independent. GLENDI is a global culinary delight specializing in Russian, Macedonian, Eritrean, Greek, Italian, Balkan, and Middle Eastern foods. There-s roasted lamb, Russian borsht and Piroshki, Greek gyros, Eritrean zigni (chopped beef in a spicy red sauce) with inerja bread, Macedonian sarma (cabbage stuffed with veal, turkey and pork), falafel with hummus and tabouleh, pork kabobs and more. Try the Greek, Eritrean or regular coffee as well as a selection of artisan teas, craft beers from Sonoma County microbreweries and an impressive selection of wines, along with a huge array of international desserts from our famous bakery. Indulge in the ?Baklava Sundae? - baklava served with ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream and cherries! We also have a German themed Biergarten, away from the activity of the dance area, offering snacks and beers from a single local brewery.
Both of our churches?the original Protection of the Holy Virgin built in 1936, and the newer Saint Seraphim?will be open for tours. The interior of Saint Seraphim, built in 1996, is in the process of being covered with frescoes in the ancient tradition of the Orthodox Church. There are few places in this country to see this kind of work being done. Each year we offer tours of the Church with talks given by master iconographer, Father Patrick Doolan. Many guests return year after year to view the progress that has been made since their last visit. A choir concert is held in our candle-lit Church at 8pm on Saturday, while guests continue to dance outside to Balkan music. Kids will delight in our children-s area in a a separate, lawn covered children-s area which is devoted to kids- activities and food, while grown-ups enjoy browsing ethnic crafts, our bookstore, and drawings for door prizes.
We view Glendi as our gift to the community. Glendi is our opportunity to share the rich cultural heritage of our parish. It is also a fund raiser, and a portion of the proceeds are donated to local charitable organizations.
Great music will be on the menu, as well. Plan to work off your meal or treats by dancing to the music of internationally known Édessa, who are featured all day both Saturday and Sunday. And even if you don't dance, you will enjoy the spirited music.
All foods and baked goods are available for take-out. Admission is $5. Children under 12: Free. Parking is now available on-site; carpooling is encouraged.
