About this festival
Here-s a stat for you. When Gail Strumpf-Cheney set the Fairfield University women-s basketball single-season record with 642 points in 1999-2000, she scored 47 points in her first three games. Fast forward 15 years, and Kelsey Carey has 56 points in the first trio of games to start the season. The junior continued her scoring spree this week, averaging 18.5 points in two games to help the Stags stay undefeated. For those efforts, Carey has earned her first-ever MAAC Conference ?Player of the Week? award.
A product of Staten Island-s St. Joseph Hill Academy, Carey was Fairfield's points-leader in both of their games during the week, averaging 18.5 points, seven rebounds, 1.5 assists, and a steal, while shooting 70 percent from the floor.
In the win at Loyola, Md., on Wednesday, Carey recorded her second career 20-point game and led the Stags on the defensive end as Fairfield outscored the Greyhounds 36-14 in the paint. Then in Saturday's triumph against cross town rival Sacred Heart, Carey scored 12 of her game-high 17 points in the second half to lead the Stags to their third-straight win.
Carey also leads the MAAC in points per game (18.8 PPG) and field goal percentage (.676). Before this season, Carey had scored more than 16 points just once in her career (22 at Siena on Dec. 3, 2014). This year, she has eclipsed that number three times in her first three games. All-time the Stags are 12-1 when Carey reaches double figures.
It will be a battle of the unbeaten when Carey and Fairfield face their stiffest challenge of the young season, hosting Hofstra at Alumni Hall on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
