About this festival

Arts on the Green announces a Great Gatsby lawn party celebrating the 118th birthday of F. Scott Fitzgerald on September 28, 2014 from 3PM ? 6PM on the Green adjoining the Arts Barn and Kentlands Mansion. Put on your flapper dress and bowtie and enjoy Gatsby on the Green featuring live music, dancing, refreshments, games and a costume contest. This event is free and open to the public and sure to be fun for the whole family. Published in 1925, The Great Gatsby is considered a literary classic and Fitzgerald's masterpiece. Set against the glamour of the Roar Twenties, the Great Gatsby defined the flapper era with its lively jazz music and energetic dancing. Gatsby on the Green is part concert, part story hour. Jazz vocalist Christiana Drapkin and her quintet play music of the Roaring Twenties and Standards evoking that era, from ?Jeepers, Creepers? and ?Melancholy Baby?, to ?Blue Skies? and ?Basin Street Blues.? In between the songs, Drapkin reads short passages from the Gatsby's famous party scene. In addition to an open air concert, the Kentlands Garden Club is hosting a costume contest with prizes for best male and female costume and best child costume. Period games will be held on the Green and an exhibition of Twenties-era dancing and lessons will put everyone in the mood for fun. Besides birthday cake, visitors can purchase alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and refreshments.
