Lisa Landi to discuss ADHD at LearningRx ?Brain Talk? in April
April 26, 2012
Houston, TX
About this festival
Living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is like being a hunter in a world of farmers, according to Lisa Landi, featured speaker at the April Brain Talk hosted by LearningRx ? Houston Central.
Landi, assistant head of the middle and upper schools at The Briarwood School, will discuss ?The ADD in All of Us? as part of LearningRx-s annual lecture series, ?Why Grey Matters: A Brain Talk.?
The event, open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 26 at LearningRx Houston Central-s location, 5110 Buffalo Speedway #202.
Participants will have an opportunity to meet the speaker and LearningRx during a wine and cheese reception before the talk or a dessert and coffee reception afterwards.
Landi credits author Thom Hartmann for first introducing the comparison of those with ADHD to hunters in his book, ?Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception.? Hartman said common ADHD traits of distractibility and quick thinking may be the result of adaptive behavior for hunters. Those traits were less desirable for farmers.
?I also plan to compare some of the traits of ADHD to certain personality profiles from the Meyers-Briggs personality test,? she added. ?It is not merely a person-s personality type that determines the diagnosis.?
Landi will also discuss the various challenges that people with ADHD invariably face in school and in life, as well as approaches to dealing with those issues.
Landi has worked with students who have ADHD since 1997, when she joined the faculty at the Briarwood School, a private school serving students who have been diagnosed with learning differences and developmental delays.
She taught English and reading intervention for 12 years before assuming her current position in 2009. Her students have a variety of learning differences, including ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, Asperger-s syndrome and dysgraphia.
?My passion is helping students gain a better understanding of themselves, so that they are able to make good decisions as they grow into independent young adults,? she said.
Landi received an undergraduate degree at Sam Houston State University and a Masters degree at Houston Baptist University. She has presented at Houston Baptist University's Annual Celebration of Scholarship on learning disabilities teaching techniques and has served on the Executive Board of the Houston branch of the International Dyslexia Association.
Henry King, owner and director of LearningRx Houston Central, said Landi-s keynote will provide invaluable insight at this spring-s lecture series. ?ADHD is such a common issue these days, and Landi is an expert in her field,? he said.
ADHD is one of many issues LearningRx Houston Central can help students surmount. The center develops unique programs based on each student, building cognitive skills to help transform the ability to learn. The center is located at 5110 Buffalo Speedway, Suite 202.
