Roman Law Firm, P.C. To Host Artist Reception for Klumpp and Vasquez March 29

March 29, 2012 Houston, TX

About this festival

For artists Terry Klumpp and Gina Vasquez, opposites attract. The newly married couple has discovered that their approaches to art are as different as their personalities. Klumpp and Vasquez have been painting for more than a decade, exploring an abstract expressionist style to produce various series of work. Their most recent works will be exhibited at the offices of the Roman Law Firm, P.C. through the month of March. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 29 at the Roman Law Firm, P.C. located at 4141 Southwest Freeway. The public is invited without charge. Stephanie Roman, Houston attorney and co-owner of Block 7 Wine Company, will host. Stephanie was drawn to the couple-s vibrant paintings. ?It-s very interesting to see how the artwork of a married couple can be so different. Their work is intriguing?it makes you think,? she said. Vasquez is a native of Mexico, where she began painting in 2001. She was drawn to abstract art in contrast to conservative, figurative styles. ?I really pushed myself to use color and light in a nontraditional way. I was attracted to the challenge of abstract painting and how it forced me to self-reflect and tap into my own consciousness,? she said. Vasquez approaches her process with an open mind. She lets her emotions and feelings control the work. Her paintings resemble organic matter, such as water, often interrupted with words or phrases inserted into the painting. The words represent thoughts that are captured in a moment of revelation. ?I spend a lot of time focusing on self-reflection, and how my surroundings affect my current situation,? she said. Klumpp is a Houston native and has practiced painting since childhood. After a recent hiatus from his creative work, he delved back into painting abstract expressionist pieces. In contrast to his wife-s approach, Klumpp works in a more structured manner. His paintings represent a thought-out process and many of his ideas are fully developed in his minds eye before he touches the canvas. While his works are abstract, they tend to represent some element of the human condition. Each series follows a specific theme. ?As a graphic designer by trade, I-m used to taking an idea and representing it visually. I do the same with my art, but I try to be more organic in my creative process during painting,? he said. ?I do encourage change so the painting might end up a bit different from what I originally planned.? Terry Klumpp paints to present stories and modern myths to a contemporary audience. His goal is to spark conversation, connect and explore new ideas by sharing his work. ?It-s important to me to create something that people can understand and relate to,? he explained. ?I hope my paintings allow viewers to feel included in the process by coming up with their own interpretations.? The couple plans to paint collaboratively in the near future. They are interested to see how their different approaches to painting will manifest in a series. The reception celebrating Klumpp and Vasquez-s works is part of Cadence Enterprise-s art on loan program.
