LearningRx Dec. 8 holiday open house features book-signing

November 17, 2011 Houston, TX

About this festival

Local children-s book authors will be the featured guests at The Woodlands LearningRx Holiday Open House. After reading selections from their works, the authors will be available to autograph their books, which may be purchased on site. The event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8. Adults and children are welcome to attend. The Woodlands LearningRx is located at 4840 West Panther Creek, Suite 205. Kim Bellini, owner and director of the brain-training center, believes that the best gift parents can give a child is to spend time together reading aloud. ?Reading is the best way to build cognitive skills in children,? Bellini said. She suggests that parents and family members place fun books at the top of their holiday shopping list. Local authors in attendance at the book sale and signing include Lauri Rosen author of Pixie and Trixie Bug, Wanda Dionne author of Little Thumb, Margaret McManis author of Ima and the Great Texas Ostrich Race, Debbie Frontiera, author of the Eric and the Enchanted Leaf series and Stacey Jata author of My Mom Has Eyes in the Back of her Head! Guests may bring these books from home or purchase them at the Open House. Rita Mills, with The Book Connection, a Houston-based children-s book publisher, also will have a sampling of titles on display. ?This is a great chance to shop for some wonderful children-s books, get them signed and support local writers,? Bellini said. Bellini will also offer tips on age appropriate games and toys that make good additions to holiday shopping lists. ?Toys and games can be very effective tools for stimulating cognitive skills -- the mental tools we use to acquire knowledge,? Bellini explained. ?Basic educational skills, like reading, writing and math, depend on the development of cognitive skills.? Creating fun ways to build cognitive skills is one of the main goals of The Woodlands LearningRx, a brain-training center that offers unique programs to transform a student-s ability to learn at a core level.
