Please join PETA Vice President Dan Mathews in a discussion of legislation affecting animal rights activism. Dan will address the new bill in Florida?SB 1246, proposed by Senator Jim Norman of Tampa?which would outlaw the photographing of animals on farms and has unanimously passed the Senate Agriculture Committee. If it becomes law, this legislation would not only aid and abet criminal animal abuse on factory farms but also set a precedent for bills covering up cruelty to animals in other industries. Come learn how this bill affects you and your work for animals and what we can all do to fight such legislation.
Dan Mathews is the irreverent force behind the colorful crusades and star-studded stunts carried out by PETA, one of the most high-profile pressure groups of all time. After Dan showed them footage of beavers and foxes killed for their pelts, fashion designers like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger agreed to stop using fur. Dan pressured Gillette to halt product tests on animals after impersonating a janitor and wheeling a TV into the company-s cafeteria to show graphic undercover footage of the gruesome experiments. He has also persuaded a nonstop parade of stars?including Chrissie Hynde, Pink, Paul McCartney, and Pamela Anderson?to protest for the cause. He was named among the world's most influential gays by Out magazine and has lectured at Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia University. Just this year, his PETA campaigns have ended up on the front pages of the Wall Street Journal, the Jerusalem Post, and France-s top paper Le Monde.
Dan-s book, Committed: A Rabble-Rouser-s Memoir, is a global odyssey which shows how the most ridiculed punching bag in high school became an internationally renowned crusader for the most downtrodden individuals of all?animals.
