Idomeneo, King of Crete, is sailing home following victory in the Trojan war. He is saved from a terrible death by Neptune, God of the Sea, and in exchange for his life, rashly vows to sacrifice the first person he meets on shore. In a tragic twist of fate, the victim turns out to be his only and much-beloved son, Idamante. One of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart-s early masterpieces, Idomeneo examines a father-s anguish when he is forced to choose between paternal love and the future of his kingdom.
