About this festival
Queen Elizabeth I loves the Earl of Leicester but suspects he has fallen for her rival, Mary, Queen of Scots. Following the example set by Schiller-s play on which the opera is based, Donizetti throws historical accuracy to the wind and orchestrates a searing confrontation between the rival Queens, ending with Elizabeth-s demand for Mary-s execution.
In Maria Stuarda, the dark intrigue of the Tudor court is thrillingly brought to life by Gaetano Donizetti-s sumptuous melodies and rousing ensembles, culminating in Mary-s heartbreaking, bravura death scene.
