About this festival

"Yocona" is ancient Chickasaw for "nations". This emerging festival began in 2007 and will grow in scale each year. In 2008 we have invited folk dance groups from Australia and Bulgaria to perform through the week in various venues in Clarksdale, Holly Springs, New Albany, Oxford and Tupelo. We have also invited a local Irish Celtic group, "Teelin", the Choctaw Indian dancers and chanters, and  Elvis to join us in this cultural exchange experience. Our mission is the preservation of traditional intangible cultures (such as music, dance, games and storytelling) and the education of Mississippi children.
